Rock & Stop_study This chair performs dual functions: when a persons weight is shifted forward, the chair becomes a stable platform for tasking. When their weight is shifted back it rocks for relaxation and contemplation. It solves the age old problem inherent in rocking type chairs. Notice the front leg goes beyond the arc, which stops the momentum necessary to rock over backward. The motivation for this design came from my desire to improve the esthetics of the two and three position chairs often used in colleges. While sketching this design, I noticed the facets of the bottom rail, (this alters the sitting angle), broke up the harmony of the design no matter how I drew the chair. When I changed the facets to an arc and drew the front leg going beyond the arc, the design coalesced, so each element related to the other: esthetically, functionally, and structurally. The Rock and Rest concept is suitable for most applications: The study chair will work in libraries, dormitories, as a task chair, for informal conferencing, and in a home office |
